This half term at St Catherine’s we have been working with chillies. We tried growing our own over the summer but our plants didn’t get very big.
Luckily for us Sea Spring Seeds were selling off their extra plants at the end of the summer so we were able to buy some of theirs instead. The chillies looked so colourful and there were lots and lots of them, it was exciting having the plants in our nurture room.
We especially liked the funny little curly chillies, and the inspired us to make chilli art.
We harvested our chillies and used them in lots of different ways. We made some different curry pastes and experimented with using a pestle and mortar and a hand blender to get them lovely and smooth. Everyone involved got to have yummy curry for dinner.
We infused the chillies and made bottles of chilli oil for our friends and families. We used a dehydrator to dry the chillies out so that they would last longer. We kept some whole and we ground some down into chilli flakes to use for seasoning. Even after all of this we still had chillies left over so we designed packaging for them and took them home to share with our neighbours.
We’ve had so much fun with this project that we can’t wait to start again on getting seeds to germinate for our harvest in 2025. This time we will start our seeds earlier so that our plants have more time to grow. We took lots of photos and saved our recipes so that we will remember what to do next year.
10/10 I was one of the St Catherine’s children great work.
